Why the Head Gravity Motion 2024 feels so different on contact

The combination matters more than any single piece. Glass fibre on the face is an elastic material: it flexes on impact, holds the ball a few milliseconds longer and gives back a plush feel instead of the dry crack of a stiffer surface.

That extra hold is exactly what you need to direct the ball. On the blocked volley you can feel the ball sit on the racket face and leave on the line you've set with your wrist.

Auxetic 2.0 works through the 38 mm frame and its job is transmission: it amplifies the feedback travelling up to the handle. It doesn't make the racket more powerful, it makes it more readable. You know if you've struck it clean before you even see the bounce.

What level of player is the Head Gravity Motion 2024 for?

It's built for the advanced control player, someone who builds the point from the net rather than leaning on a winning smash. The manoeuvrability and generous sweet spot make it forgiving, but the restrained power output means you have to bring your own technique and racket-head speed: it won't hand you free metres or close out points on its own.

That distinction matters, because a light, round, low-balance racket often gets read as a "beginner racket." That's not the case here. The ball-exit profile is sky-high, sure, but the power ceiling sits exactly where it sits.

Shot by shot: where it shines and where it falls short

Volley. Its best terrain. The low balance keeps the weight close to the hand, so the racket turns faster and you get to the backhand volley at the body without opening up your elbow. In fast mid-court exchanges you win back the time other rackets steal from you.

Bandeja and vibora. The Spin Surface grips well on the cut, and the bandeja comes out checked, with a low bounce toward the side wall. The vibora works more as a placement shot than a punishing one: it's awkward and disruptive rather than a finisher.

Smash. Time for honesty here. With a low balance and mass sitting closer to the handle, the flat smash off the 3 comes out quick but without that extra heft that drives the ball down. And the wall smash aimed at blasting the ball out of court rarely gets there: the rebound comes back playable.

Defence and ball exit off the back wall. The sweet spot that Control Foam opens up across 498 cm² is what holds up your back-court game. Low balls tight to the glass, struck off-centre, still come out with enough height to reach deep. The racket does the work for you there.

Lob. It comes out deep with minimal effort. The give in the glass fibre and the foam core mean the defensive lob reaches the back of the court even when you're stretched and hitting off-balance.

What's changed from the previous Gravity Motion

The headline change is balance, now lower than in the previous generation. That has a two-fold effect on court: the racket turns faster in your hand and control takes a step up, in exchange for giving up some of the inertia that extra head-weight used to provide.

If you're coming from the previous version you'll notice the racket is quicker at net and a touch less punishing overhead. It's a deliberate trade-off, not a design oversight.

Within Head's own Gravity line, this model sits lighter than the Head Gravity Pro. Anyone after more mass and more punishment should look at that model instead; anyone after hand speed and comfort belongs here.

Who this racket suits

• Backhand-side players who hold the net and win points through placement rather than pace.
• Players carrying arm niggles (elbow, shoulder, wrist): the soft-to-medium rubber and Soft Butt Cap damp residual vibration.

You gain control, reaction time and a big margin for error on contact. What you give up is the ability to close points outright: the Head Gravity Motion 2024 lets you play plenty of good balls, but it makes you win the point over three or four shots instead of one.

If that trade-off appeals to you — and plenty of advanced control players do value it — this is a racket that clicks from the very first knock-up. If it doesn't, the frustration will hit the day you need a winning smash and it just isn't there.
